Chinese clothing and textiles industry strives to boost competitiveness

11月 18th, 2017

The Chinese textile and clothing industry, cheap shapewear its challenges and opportunities was a topic for discussion during one of a series of presentations organised and moderated by Evalliance and its president Jean François Limantour, as part of the Apparel Sourcing trade show, which took place in Paris last month.

The presentation entitled The Chinese clothing  and textile industry: situation, strategies, outlook provided an overview of the domestic industry and its potential for future growth, and was aimed at production managers attending the leading trade fair for sourcing finished products in clothing and fashion accessories.

With 28 million employees, the Chinese clothing and textiles sector is the world’ leading producer and exporter. In 2015, its exports topped USD 284 billion, USD 44 billion of which went to the European Union. The sharp increase in wage costs, in addition to a relative lack of skilled labour, have resulted in significant relocation of Chinese clothing production to neighbouring countries such as Cambodia, Vietnam and Myanmar.

China is also investing in textiles in ASEAN countries. As a result, the drop in Chinese exports seems greater than it actually is. Inversely, consolidated Chinese exports, from China and relocated Chinese factories, continue to grow.

The Chinese strategy is multipronged: relocation to low-cost countries, establishing production units in countries that have preferential trade agreements with Europe (Cambodia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, etc), orientation towards the Chinese domestic market, upgrading Chinese ranges of products, investment in distribution and acquisition of foreign brands and businesses.

In order to retain and capture new markets, China is striving hard to boost competitiveness and marketing. The very strong attendance by Chinese exhibitors at Texworld/Apparel Sourcing is proof of China’ very vigorous growth.

Women Wearing Revealing Clothes Deserve to be Raped

11月 16th, 2017

Women who wear revealing clothes deserve to be raped, according to a majority of Brazilians.

The Government’s Institute of Applied Economic Research (IPEA) interviewed 3,810 people – mostly women – between May and June 2013 .

About 65% of interviewees empathised with rapists  in situations where women wear “clothing that shows off the body.”

Around 58.5% also agreed that “if women knew how to behave, there would be fewer rapes.”

The results of the poll sparked outcry and Brazillian women have responded by taking pictures of themselves, wearing little or no clothing, holding signs reading: ‘I don’t deserve to be raped.’ More than 20,000 have posted their photographs online.

People have also used Twitter to vent their outrage under the hashtag EuNaoMereçoSerEstrupada, which translates as IDon’tDeserveToBeRaped.

Journalist Nana Queiroz, who launched the online protest event on Facebook, said she received several threats of rape while she led the protest online.

“The most surprising thing is that it is permissible to walk naked in the Carnival, but not in real life,” Queiroz told AFP.

Carmita Abdo, the coordinator of the Sexuality Studies program at the University of Sao Paolo, told Brazilian newspaper Folha de S. Paulo that the results of the study are not surprising because Brazilian society still blames the victim in cases of abuse.

Men too have backed the campaign by posting pictures of themselves on social media, also holding anti-rape banners bearing slogans such as: “No woman deserves to be raped”.

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff also criticised the poll’s results, saying the government-run study shows that “Brazilian society still has a long way to go.”

“It also shows that the government and society must work together to tackle violence against women inside and outside the home,” she said on her Twitter account.

Last year, Rousseff signed a law aimed at protecting victims of sexual violence.

The Catholic Church criticized the law, saying it marked a first step toward broader legalisation of abortion in the country with the world’s biggest Catholic population (123 million).

Abortion is currently only maternity shapewear sale allowed in Brazil in cases of rape within eight weeks of pregnancy, or when the mother’s life is in danger.

Evacuation at Guys Marsh prison after inmate set his clothes on fire during rooftop protest

11月 16th, 2017

HM Guys Marsh prison in Dorset underwent a mass evacuation on Friday (10 March) night after an inmate started a fire during a protest. According to reports, the inmate set fire to his own clothes on the roof of the prison.

The BBC reports  that the prisoner responsible was protesting against changes to the prison regime, and was said to have been drunk at the time of the incident. Though the protest began at around 5pm, emergency services were only called to attend the fire at 8pm after the prisoner apparently tore tiles off the prison roof before removing his clothes and setting them alight.

Speaking to the press, Superintendent  Caroline Naughton of Dorset Police talked down the incident, despite a damning report in 2015 suggesting staff at the prison had “all but lost control” of it.

She said: “This was an isolated incident. An investigation is now under way to establish the exact cause of the fire. These enquiries remain ongoing.

“We would like to reassure members of the community that there is no immediate risk to those living in the surrounding area and that the incident is under control.”

Emergency services were called to Guys Marsh Prison in Dorset at around 8pm on FridayWikipediaThe report, which followed an unannounced inspection of the Category C prison, stated that levels of violence were said to be “very high.” HM Chief Inspector of Prisons, Nick Hardwick, wrote: “At a time when we are seeing some overall improvement in the system, HMP Guys Marsh stands out as an establishment of great concern.”

The fire is one in a growing list of incidents in UK prisons, after a swathe of riots took place in 2016, including at HMP Birmingham, as well as increasing attacks on prison staff.

Last month Justice Secretary Liz Truss denied the issues had been caused by cutting 6,000 members of prison staff, as she announced additional funding of £12m ($14.6m) to improve a recruitment drive.

No one was thought to have been hurt in the fire, which caused the evacuation of 64 inmates in total, though damage to the roof was thought to have been sustained during the incident.
